We are a hit in South Africa! The reviews are all glowing and the play is receiving nightly standing ovations. Tim and the cast (Rodrick, Sam and Joshua) have done an extraordinary job and it is being praised here. Opening night featured a number of leading SA theatre artists, the U.S. Consulate from both Cape Town and Durban, and the U.S. Deputy Assistant Director Bureau of African Affairs. We’ve been getting an extraordinary amount of press coverage both here in Cape Town and nationally. Tim was interviewed live on SABC which is a national television station. Here’s a sampling of press coverage:
“The structure of McCraney’s text, as well as the tight direction by Timothy Bond, enables a variety of narratives and subtexts to be explored with subtlety, often at the same time.” – Times Live
“A seductive production from the United States uses a brotherly relationship to highlight race and class themes with universal appeal.” – Mail & Guardian
“Do not miss it!” – Daphne Cooper, Bizcommunity.com
“Near flawless technique…performances that are explosive and multidimensional…moved the audience into uninhibited applause and a cacophony of catcalling, ululating and cheering.” – Kelly-Eve Koopman, What’s on in Cape Town.com
“The Brothers Size sings a universal song.” – Emilie Gambade, Daily Maverick
“Director Timothy Bond has taken a fascinating text and crafted it into a sensual, almost tactile experience.” – The Monday Missile
“American director discusses the connections that bind.” – The Citizen
“Sushi is tops for adventure addict.” - IOL Travel
This week we are having meetings with our SA partners to discuss a SA play to bring to Syracuse and a return of Syracuse to South Africa. At least one critic has already suggested this partnership continues.
The only drawback to all of this is the weather. It is just about winter here so a bit cold and rainy, although the sun broke through on Monday and Table Mountain, which we are at the foot of, made a stunning appearance.
